After ozone disinfects water, the “decomposition” of bacteria is not biodegradation in the traditional sense. Instead, ozone’s strong oxidative action directly destroys the structure of bacteria, causing them to rupture, lose activity, and ultimately disperse in the water as organic fragments. The specific process is as follows:
✅ Mechanism of bacteria “decomposition” after ozone disinfection:
- Disruption and dissolution of the cell membrane
Ozone first oxidizes the lipids in the bacterial cell wall and membrane, causing the membrane structure to break down. Cellular contents (such as proteins, nucleic acids, enzymes, etc.) leak out, and the bacteria undergo lytic death.
- Oxidative cleavage of macromolecules
Ozone further oxidizes macromolecules inside the cells, such as:
– DNA/RNA: destroys genetic material, preventing bacterial reproduction;
– Proteins and enzymes: oxidizes active sites like thiol groups (-SH), rendering enzymes inactive;
– Polysaccharides and lipids: oxidized into small organic molecules.
- Final products disperse in water
Bacterial remnants oxidized by ozone do not exist as intact cells but are suspended or dissolved in water as small organic molecules (such as amino acids, fatty acids, sugars, etc.).
These products:
– Are non-toxic and inactive;
– Can be further degraded by other microorganisms in water (e.g., during subsequent biological treatment);
– Will not recombine into live bacteria.
Ozone itself does not “consume” bacteria, nor does it “decompose” them into nutrients. It destroys bacterial structures through strong oxidation, rendering them inactive and breaking them down into harmless small molecules.
After ozone disinfection, bacteria are not “decomposed” into specific products. Instead, they are oxidatively destroyed; their cell membranes rupture, contents leak out, and they ultimately disperse in water as organic fragments or small molecules, which are non-toxic, inactive, and do not cause secondary pollution.
