Customized Heat and Noise Control for Containerized SWRO Systems at Island Resorts

Luxury island resorts need a reliable freshwater supply without disturbing the quiet guest environment.

However, a containerized seawater reverse osmosis system contains high-pressure pumps, motors, valves, cooling equipment and vibrating steel panels. In a tropical island environment, the same container is also exposed to strong solar radiation, high humidity, salt-laden air and elevated ambient temperatures.

Guanya can customize the container structure, insulation, ventilation, cooling and noise-control measures according to each resort’s site conditions.

A Real Insulation Configuration Used in a Delivered Project

In one of Guanya’s actual containerized seawater desalination deliveries, the internal steel walls were fitted with a 20 mm embossed aluminum-foil-faced, self-adhesive NBR-PVC closed-cell elastomeric insulation layer.

This is a real delivered configuration rather than a conceptual design.

The material used in this project provides:

Thermal conductivity of no more than 0.035 W/(m·K)
20 mm closed-cell NBR-PVC insulation core
Infrared heat reflectance of at least 93%
Water-vapor resistance factor of at least 9,000
Volumetric water absorption of no more than 3%
Flame-retardant, self-extinguishing performance
Acrylic pressure-sensitive self-adhesive backing
Aluminum-foil surface for moisture and vapor control

All joints and cut edges are sealed with aluminum-foil tape to reduce water-vapor penetration and condensation on the internal steel walls.

What Does This 20 mm Insulation Actually Achieve?

The lining has three main functions.

1. Reducing Heat Transfer

Based on its thickness and thermal conductivity, the insulation layer provides a thermal resistance of approximately 0.57 m²·K/W.

In a simplified calculation, it can reduce conductive heat transfer through the steel container envelope by approximately 75%–80% compared with an uninsulated steel shell.

Actual internal temperature still depends on solar radiation, equipment heat, ventilation, air-conditioning capacity, container color and thermal bridges.

2. Controlling Condensation

Island environments are normally hot and humid. When warm, moisture-laden air contacts a cooler steel surface, condensation may form inside the container.

The aluminum-foil facing, closed-cell foam and sealed joints create a vapor-control layer that helps reduce:

Condensation on internal steel walls
Water dripping inside the equipment room
Moisture entering the insulation core
Corrosion of the container structure
Humidity-related damage to electrical components
3. Reducing Steel-Panel Vibration

When bonded directly to the steel wall, the elastomeric material helps damp steel-panel vibration, rain-impact noise and part of the mid- to high-frequency mechanical noise.

The material data indicates approximately 4–6 dB sound reduction around 1,000 Hz. For the complete operating container, a more conservative preliminary estimate is approximately 2–5 dB(A).

This value is an engineering reference, not a guaranteed whole-system noise reduction. Final performance depends on the pump, motor, speed, piping, container openings and installation conditions.

Why the Delivered Insulation Is Not a Complete Soundproofing System

The 20 mm insulation layer is mainly designed for:

Thermal insulation
Condensation prevention
Moisture protection
Steel-panel vibration damping

It is not a heavy acoustic barrier and cannot completely block low-frequency noise from a seawater high-pressure pump.

Representative seawater high-pressure pumps can have sound-pressure ratings of approximately 81–85 dB(A), depending on the model and speed. Therefore, resorts with strict nighttime noise requirements may need additional acoustic measures.

Guanya does not present one insulation layer as a complete soundproofing solution. Instead, we customize the container according to the actual noise target and the distance to the nearest guest area.

Customization Options for Different Projects

The delivered 20 mm insulation configuration can be used as a base design. Additional measures can be selected according to the customer’s requirements.

Customization Level Main Configuration Suitable Applications
Thermal and Condensation Package 20 mm NBR-PVC insulation, aluminum-foil sealing and industrial air conditioning Remote islands, utility areas and equipment installed away from guest rooms
Enhanced Noise-Control Package Insulation plus pump vibration mounts, flexible pipe connections and improved door sealing Resort utility areas and installations moderately close to occupied buildings
Luxury Resort Low-Noise Package Local pump acoustic enclosure, high-density sound barrier, acoustic ventilation louvers, vibration isolation and project-specific noise testing High-end hotels, private islands and systems close to villas or guestrooms

These are customization options rather than fixed standard configurations.

The final design is selected according to:

Required freshwater capacity
High-pressure pump brand and model
Container size
Maximum ambient temperature
Distance to the nearest villa or guestroom
Daytime and nighttime noise limits
Available ventilation and air-conditioning capacity
Project budget
Additional Noise-Control Measures for Luxury Resorts

Where the desalination system is installed close to guest areas, Guanya can integrate:

Anti-vibration mounts under pumps and motors
Flexible connections between pumps and piping
Reinforced and damped container wall panels
Local acoustic enclosure around the high-pressure pump
High-density sound-barrier materials
Insulated and sealed equipment doors
Acoustic ventilation louvers
Internally lined ventilation ducts
Low-noise industrial air conditioners
Sealed cable and pipe penetrations
External acoustic barriers where required

Depending on the selected configuration, a complete customized package may be designed for a preliminary overall reduction of approximately 10–20 dB(A).

This is not a standard guarantee for every system. The contractual noise target should be confirmed after pump selection and verified through factory or on-site testing.

Tropical High-Temperature Protection

Noise control and cooling must be designed together.

A completely sealed container may reduce noise leakage, but it can also trap heat generated by pumps, motors, variable-frequency drives and electrical cabinets. An open ventilation louver improves cooling but may become a direct noise path.

Guanya can balance these requirements through:

Full-wall and roof insulation
Industrial air-conditioning systems
Heat-load calculations
Acoustic ventilation baffles
Low-air-velocity ventilation design
Light-colored or solar-reflective exterior coating
Optional external roof shading
Internal temperature and humidity monitoring
High-temperature alarms
Corrosion-resistant materials for saline environments

For tropical projects, the system can be engineered around a specified internal operating-temperature range. Air-conditioning capacity is selected according to the container size, installed electrical load, solar exposure and local maximum ambient temperature.

Why Customization Matters for Island Resorts

No two island projects are identical.

One system may be installed 100 metres away from the guestrooms, while another may need to operate only 15 metres from an overwater villa. Some resorts operate the desalination plant mainly during the day, while others require continuous nighttime production.

For this reason, Guanya does not apply the same acoustic package to every container.

We evaluate the actual project and provide only the level of insulation, cooling and noise control required by the customer.

This approach avoids unnecessary cost for remote equipment areas while allowing luxury resorts to select enhanced noise-control measures where guest comfort is critical.

Information Required for a Customized Design

To prepare a suitable solution, please provide:

Required freshwater capacity in m³/day
Feed-water salinity or water analysis
Maximum local ambient temperature and humidity
Distance to the nearest guestroom or villa
Required daytime and nighttime noise limits
Available power supply
Preferred 20 ft or 40 ft container
Site layout and installation restrictions
Factory-Built SWRO Solutions for Island Environments

Guanya integrates process design, equipment manufacturing, container modification, insulation, cooling, electrical control and factory testing into one containerized seawater desalination system.

The 20 mm aluminum-foil-faced NBR-PVC insulation described above has already been applied in an actual delivered container project.

For new projects, the insulation thickness, air-conditioning system, vibration control and acoustic package can be customized according to the customer’s environment and operating requirements.
